The Hong Kong Correctional Services Department (CSD) held its biennial Exhibition Day today at the Correctional Services Staff Training Institute in Stanley. It was an outstanding day with interesting exhibitions and demonstrations. The purpose of the day was to introduce the public to the latest developments in the rehabilitation of offenders and your webmaster had the opportunity to spend the day there. He talked to the officers and men of the CSD and learning more about the operations of this particular branch of the Hong Kong Disciplined Services Disciplined Services.

PROGRAMME

The day opened at 10:30 with a performance by the Cape Collinson Correctional Institution Band and the official Opening Ceremonies.

The Lai King Training Centre then offered a Choir Performance followed immediately by the Cape Collinson Correctional Institution Jazz Band and a Tai Tam Gap Correctional Institution Dance Performance.

(All of the CSD Institutions are here)

Next on the agenda was a performance by the Correctional Services Dog Unit (CSDU) who showed four of their German Shepherd Patrol Dogs.

This was then followed by a demonstration of Anti-riot Control and Abseiling. Several officers abseiled from the roof of the teaching complex while three vehicles full of riot control officers in full dress entered the parade grounds from Tung Tau Wan Road and began pushing the mock demonstrators back. These officers were backed up by the CSD riot control dogs. The demonstration showed how quickly the officers were able to repond and how well trained they are at difusing heated situations within the prison facilities.

The program repeated after lunch.

At the same time as the demonstrations were taking place on the Parade Ground, the Teaching Complex provided a venue for 14 various internal departments of the CSD to provide exhibitions and explanations of their specific roles.

The exhibitions were as follows:
Reception Centre Prison
Drug Addiction
Treatment Centre
Quality Assurance Division
Psychological Services Unit CSD Dog Unit
Staff Training Unit Escort and Support Group
Training Centre Operations Works and Planning Section
Detention Centre Staff Welfare Organization
Psychiatirc Centre First Aid & Nursing Training

Also open throughout the day was the HK Correctional Services Museum, the Community Education Centre, the Indoor Firing Range and the East Wing Centre which houses a Training Court Room as well as the Computer Training Room.

Of particular interest was the Exhibition by the Correctional Services Industries Unit. Three officers in full dress uniform explained to the visitors how every day about 7,000 inmate workers are engaged in various types of industrial work in workshops operated by CSI. Most of the products and services provided by CSI are supplied to government departments and subvented organisations, and they bring an incidental benefit of saving public money.

All in all the Exhibition Day was fun, entertaining and educational - and as an added benefit, the weather was perfect!

Congratulations to the Correctional Services Department of the Hong Kong for an outstanding Exhibition Day!
