Volume 1, Issue 6

Welcome to the Hong Kong Disciplined Services Collectibles Newsletter

This month we focused a bit on a new area of "collecting" which quite honestly we were not aware of until just recently. That is the collecting of photographs of active Hong Kong Police and Fire apparatus. There appear to be quite a few folks in Hong Kong, avid photographers for sure, who take pride in their collection of pictures of our current (and in some cases retired) police and fire vehicles. One site we recently visited shows a full database of fire vehicle photos and includes with each photo the year of manufacture, chassis type, bodyworks maker, the current station assignment as well as some remarks about special equipment fitted to the vehicle. If you know the registration plate number of a vehicle you can enter it and learn all the details about that piece of apparatus. If you don't know the registration number, simply scroll through the database. Interesting! You'll find links to this and other photo collections, including both Police and Fire vehicles, on our Links page.

Corrections Personnel - here's an interesting item for your collection

Hong Kong jail rehabilitation VCD

A VCD of the award-winning TV docu-drama, The Road Back II, a well-received 10-episode series, jointly produced by the Correctional Services Department and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), was broadcast from October to December 2002.

Following the enthusiastic public response to the first series of The Road Back in 2000, the department and RTHK produced a second series last year to encourage public support for rehabilitated offenders' reintegration into society.

The drama, which was based on real stories, portrayed how a group of offenders and inmates underwent rehabilitation. These real characters also appeared in the drama to share their experiences.

The Correctional Services Department has produced 10,000 copies of the VCD in Cantonese with Chinese subtitles. Apart from being distributed to schools, youth organisations and community groups to help prevent juvenile delinquency, 2,000 copies of the VCD are available for public collection at the Hong Kong Correctional Services Museum on a first-come-first-served basis.

GEORGE V. HONG KONG POLICE SWORD

Here's an interesting item that appeared on eBay recently - and sold for a whopping GBP 820.02 (approx. US $1,341.88 ).

The eBay description read:

"This fine Wilkinson sword of Pall Mall London is I am told quite "rare". The blade is 34" 1/2 long. It has a serial number on the spine of blade (17664). On one side is etched the cypher of George V. The other is Hong Kong Police with the proved mark. The grip is leather with wire wrap, all complete & tight. The guard has I think 3 branches a plain pommel I think & goes all the way down the spine of guard in metal. The scabbard has 2 hanging loops, surface rust. The drag has 2 small holes either side. Like all my others it needs TLC."

Your webmaster is trying to contact either the buyer - or the seller - to get some more information on this interesting item. We hope to report more in a future newsletter.

The eBay item is still listed on eBay as of the date of this newsletter. You can view it by clicking here.

The War Against SARS

Hong Kong's War Against SARS is progressing satisfactorily and, although not yet won, spread of the disease seems to have been contained and the daily rate of new infections has fallen to single digit numbers.

In this article, OffBeat, the newspaper of the Hong Kong Police Force, examines the role played by the Police in the war against an unknown infectious viral disease for which there is no known vaccine or proven side-effects-free treatment.

CORRECTION:
Nury Vittachi of the Far Eastern Economic Review and Guy Shirra, a RHKP Retiree were kind enough to advise us that there were a few inaccuracies in our last newsletter about the evolution of the Hong Kong Police Badge. You can read their comments on our new Letters page. We appreciate their input and corrections and urge others to send us their thoughts, ideas and (where necessary) corrections.
